Nottingham is located in Nottinghamshire, East Midlands in England. As well as the legend of Sir Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, the city of Nottingham is also well known for the lace making industry especially at the time of the Industrial Revolution when it gained an excellent worldwide reputation.
Nottingham Lace Market
Once the heart of the worldwide lace industry, at the time of the British Empire, the Lace Market is, today, a protected heritage area. The area is home to many splendid examples of 19th Century industrial architecture. The market was not like a normal market, rather than having stalls and stall holders, it was more a collection of warehouses and salesrooms displaying and selling lace. After the decline in the lace industry the area also fell into decline but, today, the vast majority of the warehouses have been renovated and restored for residential use and other purposes for example photographic studios and similar. The Lace Market is a popular tourist attraction.
Shire Hall & Galleries of Justice
Nearby the Lace Market you will find the Galleries of Justice situated in Shire Hall. Shire Hall is a Georgian building featuring Neoclassical columns, pilasters and dome. The front of the hall has, if you examine it closely, a spelling error Goal rather than Gaol. The Hall has 2 superbly preserved Victorian courtrooms plus a women’s prison, old cells, bath house, an Edwardian police station and a prisoner’s exercise yard.
Nottingham is a excellent place to take a city break. You will find plenty to see and do around the city and an amazing number of tourist attractions not too far away. Nearby places well worth a visit include; Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall and Hardwick Hall.
